Fifty Shades Collection HD

Were you one of those people who saw Fifty Shades Darker last weekend? Come on, admit it. It pulled in $11 million at the box office so it had to be you. But what was the great attraction besides yachts, masked balls, and kinky sex?

There is more to Fifty Shades Darker than just bondage games, and that was probably the reason that it was a hit. It’s a romance novel made into a film, full of the lifestyles of the rich and emotionally-needy complete with the promise of a happy ending.

It does have a fatal flaw, though. It’s boring. Halfway through, I gave up looking for originality in the plot and started wondering what to get from McDonald’s for lunch.

Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) is a billionaire playboy with a taste for domination, in bed and out. Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) was the girl that got away. Basically, this movie is him trying to get her back. She’s trying to set up her own life but still longs for his touch. He’s the catnip to her… uh, let’s not go there.
Being a billionaire, he has chauffeurs, helicopters, exquisitely-furnished apartments worldwide and the ability to buy anything he wants.
 That’s the problem faced by the plot. The obstacles that come between Grey and Steele are not very challenging when your hero can just throw money and the problem goes away. For example, when Steele is threatened by her predatory boss, Grey buys the publishing firm and fires the boss.

So what does Steele really want before giving in to her inclinations? What every woman wants – to be courted, listened to, and assured she won’t get hurt again.
 By the end, he’s on his knees, promising her he’ll change, while offering her a complete florist shop’s worth of flowers, bursting fireworks and a red room full of whips, chains and handcuffs.

I suspect that the lack of full frontal male nudity was the only reason it missed a NC-17 rating. It certainly didn’t lack full frontal female nudity.

So, rent Fifty Shades Darker for a pre-wedding party or maybe girls’ night out. Get lots of wine, an ever-flowing triple-decker chocolate fountain, and ripe strawberries. Maybe a double-feature with the first movie. Or a triple-feature after the next installment that comes out in 2018.

While Fifty Shades of Grey has been a phenomenal success, as well as boosted the sales of Kindles, it has been criticised for its bad writing, suggested themes of domestic abuse and an inaccurate viewpoint on the taboo world of BDSM.

Given that a film adaptation was a certainty, the hype around the production is immense – negative or positive, it is probably one of the most talked-about films in years.  So, Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Johnson had her work cut out to not only make a film that would be faithful to the book but also improve on the criticised source material.

Fifty Shades of Grey is about young graduate Anastasia ‘Ana’ Steele (Dakota Johnson), who meets mysterious entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for an interview for the student newspaper.  The two begin a BDSM relationship, but emotions soon threaten the couple as they struggle to ‘fulfil’ the needs of the other.
But it was not for the kinkiness of the relationship, the corniness of the writing nor the whole idea of a man being in charge.

In my own opinion, I think the appeal of attracting someone impossibly attainable is one of the reasons behind the series’ success – it is just a shame that the whole affair between billionaire Christian Grey and bookish Anastasia Steele has been overshadowed by lots of sex and bondage.

Don’t forget, the film is based on a book.  Book-film adaptations are always tricky and if people think the book is bad, the actors, director or screenwriter cannot be blamed if the film fails to exceed expectations.

So, what is the film like?

What doesn’t help this film is the choice lines retained from E.L James’ book.  While the amateurish first-person narrative is thankfully missing, certain bits are kept in that are ultimately laughable and not at all sexy.

And as for the sex scenes themselves – quite simply, they feel rushed and not as raw (nor as kinky) as depicted in the book.

Having said that, screenwriter Kelly Marcel has managed to make the most of the source material to avoid the cinematic catastrophe that people are anticipating.  There is a level of humour in the film, bringing a little unexpected light relief and the chemistry between Dornan and Johnson ranges from the teasing to the tense, which is, most importantly, believable.

With her expressive performance, Dakota Johnson manages to portray a strong-minded character in Ana, who is not immediately swayed by Christian’s smouldering good looks or sexual prowess.  Throughout the film, she is the one that holds the cards as she keeps him guessing on whether she’ll consensually become his submissive and is able to show that when the tough gets going, she can walk away.

Though looking occasionally uncomfortable, Jamie Dornan effectively instills the mystery behind the emotionally closed-off Grey.  He succeeds in conveying the conflicted feelings of his character and unlike the book, he doesn’t resort to guilt-tripping Ana into continuing the relationship.  So when the film reaches its abrupt and downbeat ending, it leaves the door open for what will become of his character in the 2016 sequel.

Given that this is her second film, Taylor-Johnson directs the film with taste and care by focusing on the interactions between Ana and Christian rather than the sexual side of the story and the film looks stunning.

At the end of the day, it probably won’t sway people’s opinions of the books but if you can get past to occasionally silly dialogue, Fifty Shades of Grey is not that bad.

Believing they've left behind the shadowy figures from the past, billionaire Christian Grey and his new wife Anastasia fully embrace their inextricable connection and shared life of luxury. But just as the Greys begin to step into their new roles, sinister events come to light and jeopardise their happy ending before it even begins. One could almost imagine Fifty Shades Freed having a deeper, subversive level, in which the wildly rich, constantly self-indulgent Ana and Christian are the villains, and their many lower-income foils and employees are the heroes. 

Romance is more or less dead in studio movies—neither the romantic comedy nor the romantic drama has remained a big-ticket item—but this week it returns in “Fifty Shades Freed,” in a form that is best summarized by a song from the Depression-era musical “Gold Diggers of 1937”: “Oh, baby, what I couldn’t do (ooh-ooh), with plenty of money and you (ooh-ooh).” The last film in the trilogy is an alternately breezy and tense tale of marital accord, conflict, and reconciliation, set against a background of fabulous and seemingly effortless wealth and the many difficulties that it poses.

The notion isn’t all facetious, either, not even in the slight, simplistic, utterly undeveloped paces through which the film puts its newlyweds, Anastasia (a.k.a. Ana) Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). They escape from their lavish wedding party and are whisked to a nearby airport, where they board Christian’s private jet—or, rather, as he instantly reminds her, their private jet. (Those new tax breaks will certainly come in handy.) What’s his is hers, but, when they get home and Ana shows up at her office at the book publisher Seattle Independent Press (ludicrously discovering that, in her absence, she has been promoted to chief fiction editor), she hesitates about making what’s his—namely, his name—hers. At home, to her domestic staff, she’s Mrs. Grey (though she’d prefer to be called Ana), but at work she wants to remain Ms. Steele, to keep her own working identity and not convey the impression that she owes her position to her husband (who has, in fact, bought the company—picking up on a gag from the second film in the series, he’s her boss’s boss’s boss). Christian, discovering that she’s using the name Steele rather than Grey in her office communications, has a hissy fit; then he gets over it.

Arriving home with Christian in his—sorry, their—sleek and vast apartment occupying mansion-like terrain inside a modern high-rise apartment building, Ana is taught the rules of the game: she can go nowhere without a member of her security detail, because wealth and fame make her a potential target of robbers and kidnappers. Daily life has become complicated, and what she used to do effortlessly and unthinkingly—going out, seeing friends, driving—is now a logistical labyrinth (though, fortunately, there’s a chief of staff at home to keep the system running smoothly). When the couple heads out to a remote old lakeside house, Christian insists on taking their Autobahn-ready Audi, which she’d like to drive. But first they’re met at the intricately ramshackle old manse by an architect named Gia Matteo (Arielle Kebbel), who flirts brutally with Christian. (The come-on line is an all-time howler: “I love what you’re doing in Africa.”) In a moment alone together, Ana gets her power moment and delivers it, putting Gia in her place with a lacerating insult that only the high-handed rich patron could get away with. The dispute, however, pivots not just on flirtation but on architecture and its uses: Gia proposes to tear the house down and is showing off her plans to rebuild a modern one on its site. But Ana wants to keep and renovate the old house, maintaining its charm while upgrading its facilities.
